The Osmo Pocket 4P is much more than a small camera with a built-in gimbal. It gives you a 1× wide-angle camera with a 1-inch sensor and a 20mm-equivalent field of view, along with a 3× medium-telephoto camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor and a 60mm-equivalent field of view. Having both cameras gives you a lot more flexibility when choosing how you want a shot to look.

The 1× camera is ideal for vlogging, landscapes, walking shots, establishing shots, interiors, and filming yourself at arm’s length. The 3× camera gives you more background compression and a more natural perspective for talking heads, portraits, products, detail shots, and cinematic cutaways.

Film 202 teaches you how to use those two cameras more intentionally instead of simply switching between them because one looks wider and the other looks closer.

Film 101 Versus Film 202

The Osmo Pocket 4P Film 101 and Film 202 courses are designed to work together, but they have different goals.

Film 101 focuses on operating the camera correctly. It covers activation, buttons, the Control Center, shooting modes, image and audio settings, white balance, ND filters, low light, color profiles, and stabilization.

Film 202 focuses on applying that knowledge.

This course is where we begin using the Pocket 4P more like a filmmaking tool. We look at how focus affects a shot, how gimbal modes change camera movement, how intelligent tracking can help solo creators, and how to build cinematic settings for different environments.

We also explore creative modes that may not be used every day but can dramatically expand what the camera is capable of producing.

The first module introduces the structure and goals of the Film 202 course.

I begin by explaining what this course adds beyond Film 101.

At this point, you should already understand how to navigate the camera, choose a resolution and frame rate, control exposure, set white balance, and select an appropriate color profile.

Film 202 builds on that foundation by focusing more heavily on shooting technique and creative decision-making.

Throughout the course, I explain how I personally use these features, but I also make it clear where my preferences are not the only correct option.

Camera settings are not one-size-fits-all. The best setup depends on what you are filming, how much control you need, whether you are filming yourself, and how much editing you plan to do afterward.

The second module focuses on three areas that have a major effect on how the camera behaves: focus, gimbal movement, and intelligent automatic modes.

Focus is one of the easiest things to overlook when using a small camera.

The Osmo Pocket 4P often focuses quickly enough that it can feel completely automatic. However, understanding how focus behaves becomes much more important when you begin filming close-up subjects, talking heads, product shots, or anything with foreground and background separation.

The 1× and 3× cameras also have different focus ranges.

According to DJI’s official specifications, the wide-angle camera can focus from approximately 0.09 meters to infinity, while the medium-telephoto camera focuses from approximately 0.2 meters to infinity.

 

This difference becomes especially important when you’re filming close subjects. The 1× camera can focus much closer, while the 3× camera needs more distance between the lens and your subject. If you move the 3× camera too close to a product, face, or object, it may struggle to lock focus.

In this lesson, we cover Single Focus, Continuous Focus, face detection, subject tracking, focus during recording, close-focus limitations, and how focusing behaves differently on the 1× and 3× cameras. We also look at practical situations like product filming, talking-head videos, moving subjects, and preventing unwanted focus shifts.

I’ll explain when it makes sense to tap the screen and choose exactly what you want in focus, and when it’s better to let the camera continuously follow your subject. For talking-head videos, I usually want the camera to recognize and prioritize my face. For product shots, I may prefer to select the exact object I want to keep sharp. We’ll also discuss how the 3× camera creates stronger subject separation, but because of that more compressed look, missed focus can be much more noticeable.

 

The built-in three-axis gimbal is one of the Osmo Pocket 4P’s biggest strengths, but it does much more than simply smooth out shaky footage. The way it responds changes depending on the gimbal mode you choose, which can completely change the look and feel of your shot.

In this lesson, we compare Follow mode, tilt-locked behavior, FPV-style movement, recentering, forward-facing and selfie-facing positions, gimbal locking, camera-direction locking, joystick control, pan speed, and tilt response. We also look at how those movements feel with both the 1× and 3× cameras.

The 1× camera can hide small movements more easily because of its wider field of view, while the 3× camera makes fast pans, sudden stops, and small hand movements much more noticeable. Because of that, a move that looks smooth at 1× can feel too aggressive at 3×. I’ll show you how to slow down your movements, use the joystick more carefully, and choose the right gimbal mode for the shot you’re trying to create.

We also cover practical techniques like reveal shots, push-ins, pull-backs, orbiting a subject, low-angle shots, tracking shots, product shots, walking shots, and static tripod shots. The goal is to help your camera movement feel intentional, not just smooth.

 

 

The Osmo Pocket 4P includes several intelligent features that can recognize, frame, and track your subject, which can be especially helpful when you’re filming by yourself. Features like ActiveTrack, Face Tracking, Frame Tracking, Multi-Person Tracking, Spotlight Follow, Dynamic Framing, and the Smart Gimbal modes allow the camera to work almost like a second camera operator.

In this lesson, we’ll go through how to select a subject, track with both the 1× and 3× cameras, track while zoomed in, and recover your subject if tracking is lost. We’ll also look at how the tracking system works together with the gimbal to keep you in the frame while you’re walking, presenting, moving around a studio, or demonstrating a product.

Tracking can be incredibly useful, but it isn’t always the best choice. Sometimes the camera may move more than you want, change your composition, or become confused when multiple people or objects are in the frame. I’ll show you when these intelligent features help and when it’s better to lock the camera in place.

We’ll also look at how tracking behaves with the tighter 3× camera. It can create a stronger talking-head look, but the narrower field of view gives the camera less room to recover if your subject moves quickly toward the edge of the frame.

The third module is the largest section of Film 202.

This is where we take everything covered in Film 101 and the first part of Film 202 and begin applying it to complete creative workflows.

 

The word “cinematic” gets used all the time, but there isn’t one magic setting that suddenly makes your footage cinematic. It comes from how exposure, frame rate, shutter speed, white balance, color, focal length, camera movement, composition, lighting, and your subject all work together. In this lesson, I’ll walk you through the settings I use as practical starting points for creating more cinematic footage with the Osmo Pocket 4P, including resolution, frame rate, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, exposure compensation, color profiles, sharpness, noise reduction, ND filters, gimbal speed, tracking behavior, and choosing between the 1× and 3× cameras.

We’ll look at how those settings should change depending on where you’re filming. In bright daylight, exposure control becomes especially important because both cameras use fixed apertures. The 1× camera has an f/2.0 aperture, while the 3× camera uses an f/1.8 aperture, so ND filters are often the best way to control light while keeping a shutter speed that gives you natural-looking motion blur. I’ll give you practical starting points for bright midday sun, cloudy conditions, golden hour, backlit subjects, outdoor talking heads, landscapes, and cinematic B-roll.

Indoors, the challenge is usually finding the right balance between exposure and image noise. We’ll discuss when it makes sense to raise your ISO, when adjusting shutter speed may help, and when adding more light is the better option. I’ll also explain how mixed lighting can affect your colors and why setting white balance manually can prevent the image from changing during a shot.

Low light is where the difference between the two cameras becomes especially noticeable. The larger sensor in the 1× camera generally performs better in darker environments, while the 3× camera may need more light or a higher ISO to maintain its compressed look. We’ll compare Normal Video mode with Low-Light Video mode and talk about why the brightest image isn’t always the cleanest or best-looking image.

The 3× camera is one of the biggest creative advantages of the Pocket 4P. Its 60mm-equivalent perspective works beautifully for talking heads, portraits, product shots, details, compressed landscapes, B-roll, and interview-style framing. It can create stronger background compression and better subject separation, but it also magnifies camera movement, needs more working distance, has a longer minimum focusing distance, and uses a smaller sensor than the 1× camera. I’ll show you how I adjust my movement, framing, focus, and exposure when switching between the two cameras.

We’ll also revisit the four color profiles: Normal, HDR 10-bit, D-Log 10-bit, and D-Log 2. Normal is best for a faster workflow with minimal grading, while HDR 10-bit is designed for HDR capture and compatible playback. D-Log 10-bit gives you a flatter image with more flexibility in post and is especially important when using the 3× camera, since that camera does not support D-Log 2. D-Log 2 is designed to take advantage of the main 1× camera’s greater dynamic range, with DJI advertising up to 17 stops. I’ll also explain why matching 1× D-Log 2 footage with 3× D-Log footage can take extra color correction because the profiles and sensors are not exactly the same.

 

The DJI Mimo app gives you a larger screen and more control over the Osmo Pocket 4P, which can be especially helpful when the camera is positioned farther away from you. In this lesson, I’ll show you how to connect the camera, monitor the live image, change settings, control the gimbal, start and stop recording, review footage, transfer files, update firmware, and troubleshoot common connection issues.

We’ll also look at how to use your phone as a larger monitor when filming yourself. You can place the Pocket 4P on a tripod, frame the shot from your phone, start recording remotely, and make sure tracking is working correctly without constantly walking back to the camera.

The Mimo app also gives you access to useful exposure tools like the histogram, which can make it easier to judge brightness, especially when filming in a flat Log profile. We’ll also cover Auto Media Transfer, which can automatically send newly recorded files to supported iPhones after the camera powers off.

The Osmo Pocket 4P can capture extremely high frame rates for such a small camera, giving you a lot of flexibility when creating slow-motion footage. The 1× wide-angle camera can record 4K slow motion up to 240 fps, while the 3× medium-telephoto camera can record 4K slow motion at 120. Both cameras can also capture high-frame-rate footage in 1080p. In this lesson, we’ll break down how slow motion works, how much each frame rate slows down your footage, and when each option makes the most sense.

 

 

Although the Osmo Pocket 4P is mainly designed for video, it can also capture detailed still photos at approximately 37 megapixels. In this lesson, we’ll go through Single Photo mode, countdown timers, JPEG, DNG, JPEG plus DNG, HDR Enhancement, Panorama, exposure, white balance, focus, composition, and how photography differs between the 1× and 3× cameras. We’ll also look at how the built-in gimbal can help you frame and capture steadier still images.

The 1× camera is useful for landscapes, interiors, groups, travel photography, and environmental portraits.

The 3× camera is better suited for tighter portraits, details, products, compressed landscapes, and subjects that are farther away.

The gimbal can also help keep the camera steady when using slower shutter speeds, although subject movement can still create blur.

DJI later added HDR Enhancement to Photo mode through a firmware update, making firmware version an important part of the photography workflow as well.

We also discuss when DNG files are worth using.

JPEG files are faster and easier to share, while DNG files retain more flexibility for adjusting exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, and color during editing.

 

The Osmo Pocket 4P gives you three different ways to compress time: Timelapse, Hyperlapse, and Motionlapse. They may sound similar, but each one creates a very different type of shot.

Timelapse is designed for situations where the camera stays in one place while the scene changes over time. It works especially well for sunsets, moving clouds, traffic, construction, events, crowds, changing light, and behind-the-scenes setups. In this lesson, I’ll show you how to choose the right interval and duration based on how quickly the scene is changing, and how those choices affect the speed of the final video.

Hyperlapse compresses time while the camera is moving. The Pocket 4P’s stabilization makes it easier to create smooth results while walking or moving through an environment. We’ll cover walking speed, framing, camera direction, gimbal modes, subject selection, motion blur, and choosing the right Hyperlapse speed. The wider 1× camera is usually the easier choice because it hides small movements and shows more of the environment, while the 3× camera can sometimes feel too tight.

Motionlapse combines a timelapse with programmed gimbal movement. You can set up to four camera positions, and the gimbal will slowly move between those points while recording the sequence. This can create a much more dynamic result than a completely stationary timelapse. I’ll show you how to choose your movement points, avoid making the motion too aggressive, and create a smooth path that supports the scene. Motionlapse works especially well for sunrises, sunsets, clouds, city skylines, indoor setups, product displays, events, and behind-the-scenes filming.
